Often described as a ‘dissident artist’, Ai Weiwei is committed to using visual and performative expression to communicate how China subjugates its citizens and has done for decades since the Cultural Revolution. He, like his liberal poet father before him, suffered and survived the betrayal of the government’s supposed reverence for artistic expression. Ai Weiwei is a hero to all who understand the precariousness of risking one’s freedom to convey their truth. Bermuda is fortunate to have the artwork of Ai Weiwei in our midst as any artworks by him, which are always beautifully executed, remind us of the precariousness and also the preciousness of our democracy and freedom.
